Right now, there are all kinds of religiously motivated wars going on. It’s the worst possible PR to interest anyone in religion, I would think. And then among themselves, they’re having plenty of controversy and, in some cases, coming to violence. So, religion itself has become a problem. So, people are going back to nature or thinking a better place to spend their time is in the mountains or the seashore. And maybe it is – certainly better than getting into needless controversies and so on. But along with the other economic crises and the corruption of politicians that seem to be generalized in all the democracies, it’s a very dismal scene sociologically for a young person who’s open to spiritual growth. So, when they say they’re interested in spirituality, they’re also saying they’re not interested in those other situations. They’d like to do something about it or to transcend it in some way.
So what can the religions do about this? I think they will have to give a strong witness of nonviolence, of understanding, acceptance, appreciation and friendship to other religions
¿Qué deben hacer las religiones respecto de la actitud “espiritual, no religiosa”?’
En estos momentos tienen lugar todo tipo de guerras motivadas por razones religiosas. No puede haber peor tipo de relaciones públicas para interesar a alguien en la religión. Y entre ellos también tienen muchas controversias, en algunos casos hasta llegar a la violencia. Por lo tanto, la religión en si se ha vuelto un problema. Las personas están volviendo a la naturaleza o pensando que un mejor lugar para pasar su tiempo son las montañas o la orilla del mar. Y quizá lo sean – ciertamente son mejores que involucrarse en controversias interminables. Pero esta situación, junto con las otras crisis debidas a la economía y a la corrupción de la clase política – lo que parece ser algo generalizado en todas las democracias – es un escenario sociológico muy deprimente para cualquier joven abierto al crecimiento espiritual. Por eso, cuando esos jóvenes dicen que están interesados en la espiritualidad, también están diciendo que no les interesa ese otro tipo de situaciones. Querrían poder cambiarlas o de algún modo trascenderlas.
Entonces, ¿qué pueden hacer las religiones al respecto? Creo que deberían dar un enérgico testimonio de no violencia, de comprensión, de aceptación, y de apreciación y amistad con otras religiones.
