Fr Carl: A lot of people say: “You know I’m spiritual but not religious.” Would you comment on that phrase as you perceive it?
The question is, is this a movement of humanity or evolutionary development that is indicating the coming of an axial period similar to the coming of rational consciousness into the emotional world of four or five thousand years ago that was worked out in Greek philosophy and the teaching about the various gods and goddesses and their activities? So, I don’t know where it’s going. I just think it’s some answer to the needs of people who really want to face the great questions of life but, for one reason or another, don’t identify with the religions.
For one thing many people now don’t get any religious education because the parents don’t know what to teach them and also religion is not in a very impressive mode at the moment because of the religious wars which turn-off noble-minded people who really would like to see war reduced. So, the first thing the religions really have to do is not convert more people to this perplexity but to promote communion between the religions that would gradually provide the respect and understanding and even love that is required to avoid the temptation of over-defensiveness, criticism and violence.

Padre Carl: Muchas personas dicen, “Tú sabes, soy espiritual pero no religioso.” ¿Podrías comentar lo que piensas de esa respuesta?
Padre Keating: La pregunta es, ¿es este un movimiento de la humanidad o un cambio evolutivo que está indicado la llegada de un tiempo de transformación radical, similar a la aparición de la conciencia racional en el mundo de hace cuatro o cinco mil años que produjo la filosofía griega y su enseñanza respecto de los diferentes dioses y diosas y sus actividades?
No sé hacia donde está evolucionando. Sólo creo que constituye una posible respuesta a las necesidades de la gente que realmente se quiere enfrentar a las grandes preguntas de la vida, pero que, por una u otra razón, no se identifica con las religiones.
En primer lugar, muchas personas no reciben ninguna educación religiosa porque sus padres no saben qué enseñarles, y la religión tampoco está muy bien vista hoy en día debido a las guerras religiosas, lo que desalienta a la gente de bien, que realmente querría que las guerras desaparecieran. Por eso, lo primero que tienen que hacer las religiones no es convertir a más personas a semejante confusión sino promover la comunión entre religiones, lo que gradualmente llevaría al respeto, comprensión, y aún amor, que se necesitan para evitar la tentación de defenderse de forma desmedida, de formular críticas y recurrir a la violencia
