The fact that the Incarnation took place means that Christ is in relationship to every human being. Hence, everybody is religious just by becoming one and is in relationship. You don’t have to get it – you are in relationship to the Source or Creator.
So, in other words, we already are most of the things we want to be but it’s unconscious to us what that state is like because we don’t have a standard when we were born of what true happiness is and our reason doesn’t function enough to criticize what we’re doing or other people or belief systems. But given the human condition, I think, religion is meant to start people on the spiritual journey and to bring them so far and to support them in the future. And I don’t see that something else can quite replace that because the other attractions for great humanism or generosity in service or art or science can easily fall under the influence of the ego. Of course, religion does too in some respects, but, at least, it gives people some foundation to build on rather than a completely infinite number of possibilities they might want to choose from.

El hecho de que la Encarnación haya tenido lugar significa que Cristo está en relación con todos los seres humanos. Por lo tanto, todos somos religiosos por el hecho de ser seres humanos, y estamos en relación con El. No hay nada que conseguir – ya estamos en relación con la Fuente o Creador.
En otras palabras, ya somos la mayor parte de las cosas que queremos ser, pero no somos conscientes de cómo es ese estado, porque cuando nacemos carecemos de un estándar respecto de qué es la verdadera felicidad, y nuestra razón no funciona lo suficiente aún para poder tener una actitud critica con respecto a lo que hacemos, o con respecto a los demás, o con respecto a los sistemas de creencias.
Pero dada la condición humana, creo, la religión debe iniciar a las personas en el viaje espiritual y acompañarlas y ayudarlas en el futuro. Y no veo que haya otra cosa que pueda suplantarla, porque lo atractivo que tienen el humanismo o la generosidad en el servicio, o le arte, o la ciencia, fácilmente pueden ser presa de la influencia del ego.
Por supuesto, esto también puede pasarle a la religión, pero por lo menos brinda a las personas una base sobre la que puedan construir, en lugar de un infinito número de posibilidades entre las que elegir.
