Meninger: When I read The Cloud of Unknowing, I realized that it was actually a manual on how to do contemplative prayer and I realized that it was teachable and so I started teaching it. That was in 1974 actually. And then, you started it because you were looking for an approach that was not Eastern – like transcendental meditation – in order to teach Christians, especially young people, contemplative prayer. That’s as I remember it; I could be totally wrong. At this point, I’m not prepared to defend anything.
Keating: What is there to defend? I was not really that much a part of Centering Prayer originally, as I remember it. I had too many other things to do to be able to give conferences. It was only after we had done it a year or two that we thought maybe we could train some other people so that they could teach it and it could be transmitted through them.

Meninger: Cuando leí La nube del No Saber me di cuenta de que en realidad es un manual para hacer oración contemplativa, y comprendí que era posible enseñarla, así que comencé a hacerlo. Eso fue de hecho en 1974.
