In 1975 my son was killed in an accident. One day I found myself in my bed curled up in a ball and I just was never going to move again. A voice came to me and said: ‘Pray!’ And I said: ‘No!’ But, I went into the church library and I reached up on the shelf and I picked off at random, The Cloud of Unknowing. You know, that there is nothing random with God! And this is all about Centering Prayer, all about contemplation, but it’s a very hard book to read, so I read it for a while and I tried. I knew this is what I needed. And then Fr. Keating came to La Casa and gave a retreat and it was just like the doors opened for me. And now I knew that this is what I needed.
