"I stand at the door and knock. If anyone opens, I will come in and have supper with that person and he with me." Notice those two concluding remarks. It's from the Book of Revelation. What Jesus is offering is the promise to identify with us, because as I said in discussing the Great Banquet, eating with someone or some group was the symbol in that culture of identifying with difficulties, values and presence. And this is why the Pharisees and the disciples of John the Baptist objected so vigorously to Jesus eating with public sinners, prostitutes, tax collectors, and the marginalized and hoi polloi of that era. When Jesus says, I’ll come in and sup with them, have dinner with them, he's saying, "Well, I'll come in and identify with you at every point, including your psychological difficulties, your emotional problems and the residue, or consequences, or natural sanctions, of your various sins of which you feel guilty or alienated from me." But notice the concluding remark is equally striking: And he will have supper with me. So, the implication is: as I identify with you, I want you to identify with me by eating with me, the symbol of identification with whomever you are having supper with. So, it's an implicit invitation to become divine, because that happens to be whom we believe Jesus is. It's an invitation to mutual identification, which involves reconciliation of any difficulties or misunderstandings, and the enjoyment of the fellowship or companionship of people who have identified with each other and are enjoying the relationship.
"Mira que estoy a la puerta y llamo; si alguno oye mi voz y me abre la puerta, entraré en su casa y cenaré con él y él conmigo." Noten estas dos afirmaciones finales. Son del Libro del Apocalipsis. Cuando Jesús dice “cenaré con él” está diciendo “Bueno, yo entraré y me identificaré contigo en todo, incluyendo tus dificultades psicológicas, tus problemas emocionales y los residuos, consecuencias o sanciones de tus diferentes pecados, que te hacen sentir culpable o separado de mí.” Pero noten que la afirmación final es igualmente sorprendente: “Y él conmigo”. Lo que implica es: así como yo me he identificado contigo, quiero que te identifiques conmigo cenando conmigo - el símbolo de identificación con quienquiera que cenemos. Es decir que es una invitación implícita a hacernos divinos, porque eso es lo que justamente creemos que Jesús es. Es una invitación a una mutua identificación, lo que implica reconciliarnos con cualquier dificultad o malentendido, y disfrutar de la camaradería o compañía de los que se han identificado unos con otros y disfrutan de la relación.
