Fr Carl: A lot of people say: “You know I’m spiritual but not religious.”
These good people who are interested in spirituality, not religion, don’t want to be told what to do. They’re not congenial with authority usually in any form coming from anywhere. And that’s why teaching is going through somewhat of a revolutionary stage where participatory education or classes are more popular than lectures.
So, it’s part of the vast cultural shift that technology has brought into the spectrum. It could be a movement of the Spirit. I think that there needs to be a distinction between people interested in spirituality as such and people interested in contemplative spirituality, or some other word that expresses it – perhaps transformative – might be required where contemplation still doesn’t have the specifically transformative meaning that we give it in our teaching and that is being used more and more of late. If we’re talking about spirituality in the sense of contemplative spirituality, this is a very positive development. This spirituality tends to emphasize experience and specifically the experience of dedicated service and meditative practices and practices to reduce the influence of the ego and false self. They’re pretty well represented in all the traditions,
Contemplativamente espiritual, no religioso
Padre Carl: Muchas personas dicen, “Tú sabes, soy espiritual pero no religioso.” ¿Podrías comentar lo que piensas de esa respuesta?
Padre Keating: Estas buenas personas, que están interesadas en la espiritualidad y no en la religión, no quieren que se les diga qué deben hacer. Usualmente no congenian con las autoridades, cualquiera sea la forma que tengan o de donde provengan. Y es por eso que la enseñanza está atravesando una etapa en cierto modo revolucionaria, en la que la educación o las clases participativas son más populares que las lecciones.
Es parte del gran cambio cultural que la tecnología ha traído al espectro de posibilidades. Podría ser un movimiento del Espíritu. Creo que necesita haber una distinción entre las personas interesadas en la espiritualidad como tal y las personas interesadas en la espiritualidad contemplativa, o quizá se necesite algún otro término que la exprese – tal vez transformadora - cuando contemplación todavía no tenga el significado específicamente transformador que le damos en nuestra enseñanza, y que es cada vez más usado en estos últimos tiempos.
Si hablamos de espiritualidad en el sentido de espiritualidad contemplativa, este es un acontecimiento muy positivo. Esta espiritualidad da importancia a la experiencia, y más específicamente, a la experiencia de servicio comprometido, prácticas de meditación, y prácticas para reducir la influencia del ego y el falso yo. Estas están muy bien descriptas en todas las tradiciones.
