I’m 26 years old now but I started doing Centering Prayer when I was 23. I think that incorporating Centering Prayer is critical – I know that I couldn’t do my helping job that I do now without taking the time to sit in the silence – there’s no way! I couldn’t do it because it’s too difficult. There’s too much human need and human suffering that I can’t handle it and I want to fix it all – and I can’t! So, I have to sit in silence and hold that tension. Young people just want to do everything – they want to save the world!  And I think it takes people different amounts of time to realize that they can’t actually save the world and, when they realize that, is when they really need contemplation because I think so many young people get burned-out very young and very quickly and they don’t have a way to be calm and to realize that they just have to be. They don’t have to do all the time. I mean, doing is important – yes! But it’s not the end all, be all. You cannot just be a doer – this is not possible without burning yourself out, I think, at least for me.
