Unity of the human race makes it possible for God to become human in such a way that in taking one person to himself he takes everybody to himself; so that we become, if we consent, certain incarnations of Christ – limited, limited, of course – and not the complete expression of God’s Son that Jesus was but, nonetheless, united with Christ in so far as we consent to this process of transformation and imitate his example.
So God then is trying to bring us to a new place – an extraordinary place – and it requires effort and yet it’s the place where we were originally created according to the insight of the Book of Genesis: Namely, we’re made in the image and likeness of God.
FR C: Is there any approach for a person to clearly grasp the beauty of our basic goodness?
I think the principal source of affirming the basic goodness is that we’re created in the image and likeness of God. God is infinitely merciful and has identified with our faults and sins in such a way that he’s taken them away. So, where did they go? Perhaps we should let them go. I think the evolutionary perspective could help to heal that – that God expects us to have all kinds of faults. But that God wants us to be perfect, I think, should be affirmed over and over again.

Creo que la fuente principal para afirmar nuestra bondad esencial es que hemos sido creados a imagen y semejanza de Dios. Dios es infinitamente misericordioso y se ha identificado con nuestras faltas y pecados de tal modo que nos los ha quitado. ¿Adónde se han ido? Quizá debamos dejarlos ir. Creo que la perspectiva evolutiva podría ayudarnos a sanar ese hecho: Dios espera que tengamos todo tipo de defectos
Pero el hecho de que Dios quiere que seamos perfectos, creo, debe ser afirmado una y otra vez.
