Some effort to moderate the excesses and to become aware of the unconscious is as important as to try to practice the virtues. And it gives motivation. So it as in AA the more you realize how sick you are the more likely you are to get to see the doctor. And the doctor is Christ in the inner room that we approach through contemplative prayer and he becomes more active so that the whole of life and world become his office and he’s constantly working with us – not to discourage us but so that we may come more and more refined and perhaps become the empty vessel that is the best position for receiving all of the Divine. In other words, if Saint Thomas says we’ve a capacity for God, obviously if there’s nothing in there you have a better capacity to receive the whole of God.

Esforzarse en moderar los excesos y volverse consciente de lo inconsciente es tan importante como tratar de practicar las virtudes. Y nos da motivación. Es como en AA: cuanto más nos damos cuenta de lo enfermos que estamos más probable es que veamos a un médico. Y el médico es Cristo, que está en la habitación interior a la que accedemos por medio de la oración contemplativa, y se vuelve más activo, de tal modo que toda nuestra vida es su consultorio y está constantemente trabajando con nosotros – no para desalentarnos sino para refinarnos cada vez más, y quizá para convertirnos en una vasija vacía, la mejor situación para recibir todo lo Divino. En otras palabras, si Santo Tomás dice que tenemos la capacidad para recibir a Dios, obviamente, si no hay nada allí tendremos una mejor capacidad para recibir la totalidad de Dios.
