We might turn our attention now to where the evolutionary process actually is in the present history of the human family. And that focus is an extremely complex and difficult situation so it seems at least to me because we have come out of a heritage that is called the “thinking animal.” Notice thinking is only an adjective! And that means it has all the instincts of the animals and, hence, these instincts are alive and dynamic and are in dialogue with the values and abstract thinking and the efforts to move into a rational response to reality instead of an instinctual one. So, it’s the struggle between instinct and genuine inspiration, you might say. The call of evolution to a more integrated and holistic reaction to reality beginning with God and a tendency to regress to the responses of the animal instinctual life that almost always arises in conflict situations. So, the animal’s response to conflict is to defend itself or to attack or to fight for its territory if it’s a territorial mammal or to fight or get rid of its competitors for the reproductive processes of their respective species. So, here we are as part of the animal kingdom and yet not completely part of it but with this new light, this new capacity, this new set of values that perceives values where they are not involved just with the senses but with further aspects of reality. So, what you do with this, of course, is the subject of religious discipline and practice.
Cuál es hoy el proceso evolutivo
Podemos pensar ahora en qué punto se encuentra actualmente el proceso evolutivo y cuál es la historia de la familia humana en el presente. Y es una situación extremadamente compleja y difícil, o por lo menos así me lo parece, porque provenimos de ancestros que se llaman animales pensantes. ¡Noten que el pensar es aquí solo un adjetivo! Y eso significa que subsisten todos los instintos del animal, y que, por lo tanto, esos instintos están vivos y dinámicos, y dialogan con los valores y el pensamiento abstracto , y con los esfuerzos para dar una respuesta racional a la realidad en lugar de una instintiva. Esa es la lucha entre el instinto y la inspiración genuina, podríamos decir - por un lado el llamado evolutivo a producir una respuesta más integrada y holística a la realidad, empezando por Dios, y por el otro la tendencia a una regresión a las respuestas de la vida instintiva animal, que casi siempre surge en situaciones conflictivas. La respuesta del animal al conflicto es defenderse o atacar, o luchar por su territorio si es un mamífero territorial, o deshacerse de sus competidores para el proceso reproductivo de su propia especie.
Así que aquí estamos, siendo parte del reino animal y sin embargo no totalmente, ya que tenemos esta nueva luz, esta nueva capacidad, este nuevo conjunto de valores con los que percibimos, valores que no solo involucran nuestros sentidos sino también otros aspectos de la realidad. Lo que hacemos con esto, por supuesto, es de lo que tratan la disciplina y la práctica religiosas.
