The Great Banquet

A weekly message from Fr. Thomas Keating on Awakening to the Contemplative Dimension of Life

English Transcript

What God wants to do as the supreme host of the universe
is to transmit as much of the Godhead
as we can possibly receive.  That’s really
the meaning of the Parable of the Great Banquet
in which three categories are invited.
First, the peers of the great landowner are invited;
then the poor, whom the prophets had always said
were the favorites of God;
and when the poor don’t fill the house,
the householder says to his servant,
‘Go out and bring in anybody you can find.’
  The householder goes in and sits down to eat with
this motley crowd of marginalized people nobody else
would have invited.
In that culture, sitting down to eat a meal was complete
identification with their values, problems,
and the consequences of their illness
and of all human ills.
And so this is an enormous affirmation
of what the Incarnation of Christ is.

Behold, I stand at the door and knock.
If anyone hears my voice
and opens the door,
I will enter his house
and dine with him,
and he with me.

Primero son invitados los pares del importante hacendado;
que son los preferidos de Dios;
