I see three stages to the spiritual journey by which I understand the transformational process that is at the heart and soul of creation What that involves may take us a lifetime to understand. It's an incomprehensively beautiful vision. Only the Ultimate Goodness could have thought it up. The first step of our spiritual journey, we might say, is the realization – not just a vague acknowledgement, but the realization – that there is an "Other" (capital "O"), which goes by many names in Christian and secular history from the beginning. Everyone has developed a cultural nickname or name for "Issy." It's the awareness that there is an Other and we’ve got to do something about this, and we’ve got to accept what seems to be an invitation to join in his life and his life is the divine life. He seems to be interested in finding out what it's like to be in human life. We feel – this is our conversion – interested in finding out what it’s like to be in God's life and love. Here we are then at the first step of our spiritual life is the realization that we've got to enter into a relationship with the Source of our being that is reaching out to us in some way that we don't understand, and which manifests in our desire for happiness. Perhaps the innate human desire for happiness and perhaps that’s the greatest proof of God's existence. Where else would the desire come from? Certainly not us earth-bound folks.
