We're raising the question whether we can really be faithful to our own religion without loving all the others who are trying to go in the same direction. Vatican II has given us permission to acknowledge this work of the Spirit in other religions. This is an enormous breakthrough in cultural attitudes. It doesn't mean that we are not wedded to our own religion that works best for us. But the attitude toward missionary work has to be adjusted towards emphasizing collaboration and communion rather than conversion in our day because of the terrible damage that religious wars intertwined with politics has gotten to such a point that no one wants to practice any religion at all. Certainly no one religion can contain the whole of God’s wisdom. We need the contributions of all the religions in order to enrich the basic core of wisdom of the human family itself.
Una nueva actitud hacia el trabajo misionero
Estamos preguntándonos si es posible ser fieles a nuestra propia religión sin a la vez amar a todas las otras que están tratando de ir en la misma dirección. El Concilio Vaticano II nos ha dado permiso para reconocer esta obra del Espíritu en otras religiones. Esto representa un enorme avance en nuestras actitudes culturales. No significa que no estemos comprometidos con nuestra religión, que es la mejor para nosotros. Pero hoy en día la actitud adecuada con respecto al hecho de misionar debe poner el énfasis en la colaboración y la comunión en lugar de la conversión, debido al terrible daño que han causado las guerras religiosas, especialmente si se mezclan con cuestiones política. Este ha llegado a tal punto que ya nadie quiere practicar ninguna religion.
Por cierto, no hay una única religión que pueda contener la totalidad de la sabiduría de Dios. Necesitamos de la contribución de todas las religiones para enriquecer el núcleo básico de sabiduría de la familia humana.
