As a Protestant member of the Christian family, I come from a tradition that does not have a rich supply of the language and resources to help us in terms of the contemplative dimension of our spiritual life. And so, Contemplative Outreach has been that piece which has given the language – the contextual framework – to understand it which has been a huge piece for me. And I liken Contemplative Outreach almost as the midwife in terms of my spiritual journey, in terms of helping to birth that deeper awareness, and to give life to that aspect of me. During a year of deployment to Iraq, as an Army chaplain, seeing and experiencing God’s presence through the other Iraqis who were there that we would go and visit at their forts and so forth. But even at the border crossing where I got to meet Iranians and, in particular, some of the imams, who would notice the cross on my hat and engage me in conversation – even these folks which we would identify as ‘the enemy,’ so to speak, or at least representing that country – very much I could see within them God’s presence because we both share the same common denominator, the same base level. And Centering Prayer has been a huge part of having me to become aware of that, and to see that, and to touch that level of our human existence, that common denominator with all – everybody – no matter where they are in the world.
Mi experiencia como capellán del ejército: ver la unidad por medio de la gracia de la Oración Centrante
Como miembro protestante de una familia cristiana, vengo de una tradición que no nos suministra el lenguaje y los recursos suficientes para ayudarnos en la dimensión contemplativa de nuestra vida espiritual. Y por lo tanto, Contemplative Outreach ha sido la que me ha dado ese lenguaje – ese marco contextual – para comprender lo que ha sido algo tan importante para mí. Y Contemplative Outreach ha actuado casi como lo haría una partera respecto de mi viaje spiritual, en el sentido de ayudar a que naciera esa conciencia profunda, dar vida a ese aspecto de mi mismo. Durante un año en el que estuve destinado en Iraq, como capellán del ejército, vi y experimenté la presencia de Dios en los otros iraquíes que estaban allí , a los que íbamos a visitar en sus fortificaciones. Pero aún en los cruces de frontera, en donde me encontraba con iraníes y, en especial, algunos de los imanes, que veían la cruz en mi casco y entablaban conversación conmigo – aún en estas personas que identificábamos como “el enemigo”, por así decir, o por lo menos que representaban a ese país – aún allí podía ver dentro de ellos la presencia de Dios, porque ambos compartíamos el denominador común, teníamos la misma base. Y a la Oración Centrante le debo una parte de la conciencia de eso en mi, el poder verlo, poder hacer contacto con ese nivel de nuestra existencia humana, ese denominador común con todo – con todos – no importa donde estén en el mundo.
