Centering Prayer has been a great gift to me. I began to look at Lectio in a whole different way. Lectio Divina – praying with Scripture. I would do my Centering Prayer first to still me and then I would do my Lectio. If you’re rooted in the Word, it first helps you preach better because now all of a sudden you’re listening in a much clearer way to what Jesus said and you’re also able to see in a much clearer way what Jesus did. And so, when you’re able to do that, what happens is then all of a sudden his word, and what he did, becomes more a part of who you are and manifests itself in your behavior with other people but also it helps you to really preach better because you have a much greater understanding of the Word itself that you’re preaching. One of the fruits is that you really start preaching the radical demands of the Gospel because sometimes you don’t want to see what Jesus did or you don’t want to hear what Jesus did because, that way, if you don’t hear or see it, you don’t have to respond to it. but, if you enter deeply into what he said, and what he did, then all of a sudden, you’ve got to preach about things that people may not want to hear.
La Oración Centrante y la Lectio Divina
La Oración Centrante ha sido para mi un gran regalo. Comencé a considerar la Lectio desde una perspectiva muy diferente. La Lectio Divina es orar con las Escrituras. Hacía primero mi Oración Centrante para aquietarme y luego hacía mi Lectio. Centrarse en la Palabra ayuda ante todo a predicar mejor, porque de pronto escuchamos de forma mucho más clara lo que dijo Jesús, y también podemos ver mucho más claramente lo que hizo. De este modo, cuando así lo hacemos, lo que sucede es que de pronto su palabra y lo que hizo se vuelven parte de quien somos y se manifiesta en nuestra conducta para con los demás, y también realmente nos ayuda a predicar mejor porque tenemos una mucho mayor comprensión de la Palabra misma que predicamos. Uno de los frutos es que empezamos a predicar acerca de las drásticas exigencias que imponen las Escrituras, porque a veces no queremos ver lo que hizo Jesús o no queremos escuchar lo que Jesús dijo porque de ese modo, si no vemos ni escuchamos, no tenemos que responder a ello. Pero, si penetramos profundamente en lo que dijo y en lo que hizo no podemos no predicar acerca de cosas que las personas no quieren oír.
