Eating with someone or some group was the symbol
in that culture of identifying with difficulties, values,
and presence. This is why the Pharisees and the disciples
of John the Baptist objected so vigorously to Jesus eating
with public sinners, prostitutes, tax collectors, and the marginalized
and hoi polloi of that era.
So when Jesus says, I’ll come in and have dinner with them,
he’s saying, I identify with you at every point.
But notice the concluding remark,
which is equally striking:
And he will have supper with me.
So the invitation is: As I identify with you,
I want you to identify with me
by eating with me, the symbol of identification
with whomever you are having supper with.
So it’s an implicit invitation to become divine,
because that happens to be who we believe Jesus is.

and dine with him,
and he with me.

Compartir la comida con alguien o con algún grupo era, en esa cultura,
el símbolo que representaba el identificarse con las dificultades,
con los valores y la presencia de los comensales.
Es por eso que los fariseos y los discípulos de Juan el Bautista se oponían tan decididamente a que Jesús comiera con pecadores públicos, prostitutas, recaudadores de impuestos, y los marginados y con la plebe de la época.
Así que cuando Jesús dice: entraré en su casa y comeré con ellos,
lo que está diciendo es: me identifico con ustedes en todo.
Pero noten lo que dice para terminar,
que es igualmente impresionante:
Y él cenará conmigo.
Por lo tanto la invitación es:
Así como yo me identifico con ustedes,
yo quiero que, te identifiques conmigo
al comer conmigo, el símbolo de la identificación
con quienquiera que estés cenando.
Se trata entonces de una invitación implícita a volverse divino,
porque eso creemos que es Jesús.
