Fr. Thomas: So, the word of God, like any word – again, we’re in metaphorical language here – vibrates.  It’s a vibration.  What you’re hearing is not my words but a certain set of vibrations that your ears and brain are translating along with your preconceived ideas and education and emotional personal history.  You’re hearing what I’m saying through your particular capacities and preparation and lifetime.  So, some of the things I’m saying will turn up in your hearing quite differently from what I intended or what I thought I was communicating.

Betty Sue Flowers:  And I can take that miscommunication on to the next person and it can live through centuries of miscommunication.  So, that people then think of God as some kind of judging, negative presence in their lives.  They flee from God rather than attempting to build a relationship with God.

Fr. Thomas: Often because we have been misinformed about the nature of the Ultimate Reality.  And because it’s unknown, we have a tendency to be afraid of it anyway. And fear is another great obstacle to relationship with God, because fear as a feeling hinders relationship.

Basically, it comes down to this, that most people, because of their education and their preoccupations come to full reflective self-consciousness without an adequate relationship with God, and tend to stop their education at that point.
