I think certainly for Centering Prayer, it is precisely the consent of God’s presence and action within us, the Divine Indwelling, that we are preparing ourselves to receive, and that is all we are doing.
Now, on the level of rational consciousness, effort is all-important. So, at what point do you stop making effort if you are advancing? Effort becomes a hindrance to further development at a certain point, so it is when rationality turns into self-in-God, experience, and conviction. Then little by little—it takes time. That is why we live a long time. Some of us are slow learners, but it is going in a direction that is absolutely sublime and transforming; and it seems to me, that the purpose of the Redemption was to go to the extreme divine length to try to convince us that God is willing to do anything at all to bring us into participation in the divine nature, both now and in the world to come. So, what dies in this perspective is only the body; the self, whatever self you are in, continues because that self ultimately is beyond the True Self even and is ultimately the Word of God manifesting in our particular human uniqueness.
La promesa de la redención
Creo ciertamente que, para La Oración Centrantre, es precisamente el consentimiento a la presencia y acción de Dios en nuestro interior, la Inabitación Divina, que nos preparamos a recibir, y eso es todo lo que estamos haciendo.
Ahora bien, en el nivel de la conciencia racional el esfuerzo es fundamental pero, ¿en qué punto dejamos de hacer esfuerzos si estamos avanzando? El esfuerzo se vuelve un obstáculo para un mayor desarrollo en un cierto punto, así que esto ocurriría cuando la racionalidad se transforma en yo-en Dios, experiencia y convicción. Entonces, poco a poco… lleva tiempo. Es por eso que vivimos un largo tiempo. Algunos de nosotros somos lentos para aprender, pero es ir en una dirección que es absolutamente sublime y transformante; y a mi me parece que el propósito de la Redención fue ir al extremo divino para tratar de convencernos de que Dios está dispuesto a hacer cualquier cosa para llevarnos a participar de la naturaleza divina, tanto ahora como en el mundo por venir.
Entonces, lo que muere según esta perspectiva es solo el cuerpo; el sí mismo, cualquiera sea el yo en el que estamos, continúa, porque el sí mismo en última instancia está más allá aún del Verdadero Yo, y es en última instancia la Palabra de Dios que se manifiesta en nuestra particular singularidad humana.
