God hides behind and in visual things in such a way that he is never absent. So the person whose interior eye, whose third eye of faith, has opened, sees that, not as a particular object but as a presence in some way that is intuitive rather than just sensible.
Then hearing things in such a way that we‘re always listening no matter what is being said to this sound of sheer silence which is God’s presence passing by. So between the syllables, between the words, by just sitting still, deep listening, this can be done in Lectio too by going slowly and pausing when you feel drawn to silence. This is allowing silence to morph into Presence and Presence is clearly God’s presence. So then, the sense of attraction to silence, that’s the sense of smell – It’s an attraction to something delightful. Then we have touch which is the sensation of being kissed or embraced or held, which is when the Presence actively steps out of the Presence into some kind of activity that applies that Presence to our bodies and minds and spirits. Then taste would be the arising within of the presence of God. So, you’ll notice if you look at Scripture from this perspective, it’s often talking about the perfume of God, the taste of honey in the mouth and, of course, in the Song of Songs, it’s filled with all those images.
So, it suggests that there is a passion in God to communicate himself. He’s not just passively interested in us. God is not only looking for us but is looking for us with a certain energy and passion and eagerness.
Ver, oír, sentir, saborear, tocar la Presencia
Dios se oculta detrás y dentro de las cosas que vemos de tal manera que nunca está ausente. Por lo tanto la persona cuyo ojo interior, su tercer ojo de la fe, se ha abierto, lo ve, no como un objeto particular sino como una presencia que de algún modo es intuitiva más que sensible.
Entonces oímos de tal modo que estamos siempre escuchando, no importa que se esté diciendo, este sonido de puro silencio que es la presencia de Dios que pasa junto a nosotros. Así, entre las sílabas, entre las palabras, sólo con quedarnos quietos, y escuchar profundamente… Esto puede hacerse también en la Lectio, avanzando lentamente y deteniéndonos cuando nos sentimos atraídos al silencio. Esto es permitir que el silencio se transforme en Presencia, y la Presencia claramente es la de Dios. Luego, hay un sentido de atracción al silencio, que es el sentido del olfato – una atracción por algo que nos deleita. Luego tenemos el tacto, que es la sensación de sentirse besado o abrazado, que es cuando la Presencia activamente sale de la Presencia en una especie de actividad que aplica la Presencia a nuestro cuerpo, mente y espíritu. Luego el gusto, que sería como el surgimiento en nuestro interior de la presencia de Dios. Así, si se fijan en las Escrituras desde esta perspectiva, van a notar que muchas veces se habla del perfume de Dios, del sabor a miel en la boca y, por supuesto, en el Cantar de los Cantares estas imágenes abundan.
Esto indica que hay una pasión en Dios por comunicarse. Su interés por nosotros no es meramente pasivo. Dios no sólo nos está buscando, sino que nos busca con una cierta energía y pasión y entusiasmo.
