We already are most of the things we want to be but it’s unconscious to us what that state is like because we don’t have a standard when we were born of what true happiness is and our reason doesn’t function enough to criticize what we’re doing or other people or belief systems. But given the human condition, I think, religion is meant to start people on the spiritual journey and to bring them so far and to support them in the future. And I don’t see that something else can quite replace that because the other attractions for great humanism or generosity in service or art or science can easily fall under the influence of the ego. Of course, religion does too in some respects, but, at least, it gives people some foundation to build on rather than a completely infinite number of possibilities they might want to choose from.

Ya somos la mayor parte de lo que queremos ser, pero no tenemos conciencia de cómo es ese estado, porque al nacer no tenemos un parámetro de lo que es la verdadera felicidad, y nuestra razón no funciona suficientemente bien para criticar lo que hacemos o los sistemas de creencias de los demás. Pero, dada la condición humana, creo, la religión tiene por objeto introducir a las personas al camino espiritual y llevarlos hasta donde puedan y apoyarlos en el futuro. Y no veo que haya alguna otra cosa que pueda reemplazar ese aspecto, porque las otras cosas que puedan atraernos, como el humanismo o la generosidad en el servicio, o el arte, o la ciencia, pueden fácilmente ser presa de la influencia del ego. Por supuesto también puede ser el caso de la religión en algún sentido, pero al menos ésta da a las personas ciertos fundamentos sobre los que construir, en lugar de un infinito número de posibilidades entre las que deberían elegir.
