To this day Eastern Orthodox Christians say perfectly boldly
that our destiny is to become divinized or deified.
That language was also used by the Western Fathers
of the church for a while.
But then with Western modesty, or circumvention,
or whatever is characteristic of Roman consciousness
or culture, the Western church got away from that language,
although it never denied it.
But when mystics started saying it again,
they were looked upon with astonishment and suspicion.
Some of them were burned at the stake for their trouble,
so they stopped opening their mouths, and as a result,
Western Christianity is really languishing from a spiritual desert
that has gone on for centuries.
While it was very rich in earlier times,
and has continuously been added to in pockets of spirituality,
the whole contemplative tradition has to be recovered.

All of us, gazing with unveiled face
on the glory of the Lord,
are being transformed into the same image
from glory to glory, as from the Lord
who is the Spirit.

Recuperando la Conciencia de Nuestro Destino Divino
Hasta hoy los cristianos ortodoxos orientales dicen perfectamente con audacia
que nuestro destino es ser divinizados o deificados.
Esos términos también fueron usados durante un tiempo
por los Padres de la iglesia occidental.
Pero luego, con la modestia occidental o elusión o lo que fuera
que caracteriza la conciencia o la cultura romana
la iglesia occidental evitó usar ese tipo de lenguaje
aunque nunca lo negó.
Pero cuando los místicos empezaron a expresarse en esos términos
despertaron asombro o sospecha.
A algunos los quemaron en la hoguera como premio a sus esfuerzos
así que dejaron de abrir la boca, y como resultado
el cristianismo occidental ha languidecido en un desierto espiritual
que ha durado siglos.
Aunque la tradición contemplativa fue muy rica en los primeros tiempos
y recibió la continua contribución de diversos focos de espiritualidad
ahora es necesario recuperarla.

que es Espíritu.
