All our ideas of contradictions and opposites belong to the limitations of rational consciousness. We can make an effort not to be unduly influenced by that background, but it does not take away, sometimes, the sense of frustration or self-hatred that can exist. And the spiritual life is not about self-hatred. That is a form of pride. It is not humility. Self-hated is usually because we do not measure up to our standard, and in a high-achieving culture like we are in, it is the education that most people are receiving. But, it is opening to the reality of further evolution that, I think, would free theology of some of the negative aspects of the essentialist kind of theology that emphasizes God’s transcendence. We are not saying God is not transcendent, we are saying that [God] is infinitely diverse at the same time and, as far as creation goes, the God of creation is totally available but the un-manifest God is totally transcendent.
The marvelous gift of God is if you do not get around to the spiritual life or do not quite finish it, death will take care of the rest, because it really … there is nothing left of you at that point. But, it takes practice and it takes time for each level of consciousness to make its contribution.

Todas nuestras ideas acerca de las contradicciones y los opuestos corresponden a las limitaciones de la conciencia racional. Podemos hacer un esfuerzo para no ser demasiado influenciados por ese contexto, pero eso no hace que desaparezca, a veces, la sensación de frustración o de autodesprecio que pueda existir. Y la vida espiritual no tiene que ver con el autodesprecio. Esa es una forma de arrogancia. No es humildad. El autodesprecio se debe usualmente a que no estamos a la altura de nuestro estándar, y en una cultura que premia la capacidad para el desempeño como lo es la nuestra, esa es la educación que recibe la mayoría. Pero abrirse a la realidad de una mayor evolución es lo que, en mi opinión, liberaría a la teología de algunos de los aspectos negativos del tipo de teología esencialista que enfatiza la trascendencia de Dios. No estamos diciendo que Dios no sea trascendente. Estamos diciendo que [Dios] es infinitamente diverso a la vez, y, en términos de la creación, el Dios de la creación está totalmente a nuestro alcance, pero el Dios no manifestado es totalmente trascendente.
El maravilloso don de Dios es que, si no encontramos tiempo para la vida espiritual o no podemos llegar a su culminación, la muerte se hce cargo del resto, porque en realidad… no queda nada de nosotros en ese punto. Pero se necesita práctica y se necesita tiempo para que cada nivel de conciencia pueda hacer su contribución.
